Bible and devotions

Filed under: Family Devotions, kids, reading — Josh @ 11:49 pm

Just came across this good post about family devotions.  The one concept that was a new thought to me was that each child should have their own Bible during the Bible reading time.  Usually I try and get out the Bible and have all the kids listen.  It never occurred to me to have them get out their own Bibles.  We probably need to purchase some additional kids Bibles but that is a small price to pay for family devotions.  I still need to come up with a “box” to put the Bibles in or maybe a shelf.

Thank you for everyone who came to my Wichita TPA session. It is encouraging to see all the men with an interest in discipling our children. Hopefully you received lots of useful information. I know I was convicted of many things I need to to improve on after hearing Voddie Bauchum.

Google launches eBookstore

Filed under: Books, Resources, reading — Josh @ 3:10 pm

Google just launched its ebookstore.  This along with other ebookstores could provide some additional resources for homeschoolers.   It will at least open up options to read out of print books.

Reading good books

Filed under: Books, Goals, reading — Tags: , — Josh @ 10:17 pm

One of may main goals in homeschooling is for my children to read good books and enjoy reading.  I always pray with my child that they will learn to read so they may read the Bible.

I just came across John Maxwell’s video about encouraging children to read good books.  In it he talks about how he didn’t get paid to do chores, but to read good books.  John’s dad had a good reason he said “Why would I pay you to take out the garbage unless I wanted you to grow up to be a garbage collector.  I put my money where my values are.”  Our children and the books they read are one of the greatest investments we can make.  John pays his children and grandchildren to do a one page book report.  Here is a list of good books he recommends.

I have also read a couple of John Maxwell’s books and I would love to read more.  I highly recommend his book Developing the Leader Within You.
