TPA 2010 recap

Homeschool conferences are basically just parenting conference but a whole lot more.   We care deeply about our children and we want to be the best parents as God intended.  One of the best ways we can be a good parent is to instruct our children at all times.  Homeschooling conferences encourage that.

The 2010 Wichita homeschool conference once again provided encouragement to parents in the Wichita area. It was my second year to attend the full conference and I must say it was just as good as last year. There are three things I really like about homeschool conferences.

  1. Books and cirriculum
  2. Learning from the experience from others
  3. Help from others (The best cirriculum advice has come from friends who have used the cirriculum)
  4.

I love the learning part. The real truth is that some of us who are homeschooling get the chance to learn what we didn’t learn in at school.  I know I have always been bad at spelling but through the opportunity of training my kids I also have the chance to learn how to spell better.
Doug Phillips from Vision forum was the main keynote speaker. I enjoyed his talks and I thought it was much more motivating to hear him in person. Overall the main theme seemed to be:

We need to show the contrast of thinking of children as a blessing vs how the world sees families.

For Fathers he had a special challenge

We must be disciplined as the leader I our home. We need to see the victory of God. We need to lay down our lives for our family.
One of the quotes I liked was from his father.
“Leaders are readers”
This is so true. Just look at great leaders even of our day. Are they up on all the latest tv shows? Not usually but they are reading.  Business leaders always seem to be up on the latest management books.  Experts become experts by reading.

Other notes I thought were important:

We are in a war against the culture who do not see the Blessings of children.

“Do you see the future victory of God through your children?”

“Do you see your children as a source of light and joy?”  The world does not see them as this, but the Bible does.

We need to show love to our children by our actions.

Mud footprints

Normally mud footprints in the house would not be a good thing. In this case my daughter managed to bring mud in the house and put a smile on my face. Since we didn’t have any finger paints my creative daughter used mud for this artwork. It is so amazing to see how God has gifted each of my children with different gifts and talents from each other. Never a dull moment.

Introduction

My name is Joshua and my wife and I have four young children. Since my oldest is only 8 we are on the beginning side of Homeschooling. I was not homeschooled myself but I am thankful my parents sent me to a Christian school that would affirm a Biblical worldview. My wife was homeschooled and when we started having children we made the decision to homeschool. What a great decision this has been!

One of the things I have enjoyed about homechooling, is that I am much more aware of how every moment I am with my children can be a teachable time. I am a firm believer in Deut 6:7 “And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.” Last fall I came to the realization that since I have a full time job, I only have a limited amount of time to spend with my children. With the time I have, I began looking for ways I as a father could better equip my children. I noticed there seemed to a lot of information and groups for mothers who homeschool. I also noticed that there were not any groups in Wichita to encourage homeschool dads in their endeavor to instruct and guide their children.

After much thought and prayer, The Lord seemed to impress upon my heart to start a group in Wichita that could provide practical help and encouragement to homeschooling fathers. It is my vision that we as homeschool fathers, can get together about once a month to help and encourage each other with our attempts to train and disciple our children. Its my hope that we can collectively pool our experiences and knowledge to help one another in a way that is geared towards fathers.
